Purpose:
To investigate the agreement between the results of impression cytology (IC) and clinical suspicion in patients with various types of ocular surface lesions over an 11-year period in a referral center.
Methods:
IC findings from patients with various ocular surface disorders between 2005 and 2015 were reviewed. The agreement and disagreement between the clinical suspicions and IC results were evaluated by calculating the Cohen’s Kappa coefficient.
Results:
Overall, 537 patients with ocular surface disorder were enrolled in this study. General agreement of all groups of ocular surface disorders was statically significant (˃0.6). This agreement was high in benign pigmented lesions and Dry eye related disorders and malignant pigmented lesions with Cohen’s kappa index of 1 and 0.93 and 0.89 respectively, and was moderately high in CIN and limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) with Cohen’s kappa index of 0.68 and 0.65 respectively.
Conclusion:
Our series demonstrated a moderately high agreement between clinical suspicion and the IC diagnosis in patients with ocular surface disorders.
