Purpose:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity in preterm infants of ophthalmology department of Vali-e-Asr hospital.
Methods:
All premature infants under 37 weeks or less than 1500 grams, who referred to the ophthalmology department ophthalmic examination was done by ophthalmologist.
Results:
Of the 209 patients referred to the ophthalmology department of eye clinc hospital, 15 infants (7.2%) were diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity.
The prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity in infants had significant relationship with maternal gestational age and birth weight, but there was no significant relationship with other risk factors (gender, oxygen, respiratory distress, sepsis, and phototherapy).
Conclusion:
The prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity in this area was lower than other medical centers studied; but due to the risk of the disease in premature infants, routine examination at neonatal intensive care units is recommended. This lower ratio may be contributed to low birth weight mortality, diagnostic approach or ethnicity of this region.
