Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to determine the correlations between the weight, the height and the BMI with the biometric parameters of the healthy eyes in the age range of 20-50
Methods:
The subjects participated in this study were selected from noor didegan ophthalmology clinic in Karaj, Alborz, Iran. The inclusion criteria were: age range 20-50, no history of any systemic and ocular pathology, no history of ocular trauma or surgery, VA 20/20, refractive error (SE) of between -2.00 and +2.00. After performing a routine eye exam, the right eyes were examined by Haag-Streit Lenstar LS 900 and the biometric parameters (axial length, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, and the power of cornea) were recorded. The heights and the weights were recorded without shoes and lightest clothing.
Results:
A total of 123 healthy subjects participated in this study, with the mean weight, height, and BMI of 79.8 Kg +18.9, 170.4 cm +9.8, and 27.5 + 6.2, respectively. The weight showed statistically significant correlations with axial length, (r= 0.253, P=0.005) and the anterior chamber depth, (r= 0.212, P=0.016). BMI showed only a statistically significant correlation with the lens thickness (r=0.197, P=0.029). The height showed statistically significant correlations with the axial length (r= 0.352, P<0.001), anterior chamber depth(r=0.267, P=0.003), K1 (r= - 0.343, P<0.001) and K2 (r= -0.348, P< 0.001).
Conclusion:
In healthy adults in the age range of 20-50, the weight, and height showed weak positive correlations with the axial length and anterior chamber depth. Further studies are required to investigate whether these relationships varies in different ocular and systemic pathologies.
