Purpose:
To evaluate the job satisfaction level of ophthalmologists in Iran, and to determine the associated factors that may impact on overall their job satisfaction.
Methods:
In this cross sectional study, 318 ophthalmologists (73.90% male and 26.1% female) were interviewed by the 10-items Warr-Cook-Wall questionnaire with 7-point-Likert scales which transformed to 0 (most dissatisfied) to 100 (most satisfied) scale. Questionnaires were randomly distributed among registered ophthalmologists at the 25th Annual Congress of the Iranian Society of Ophthalmology in December, 2015. All ophthalmologists were selected from different specialities including Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery (40.6%), Vitreoretinal Diseases (32.7%), Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery (15.8%), Glaucoma (7.9%) as well as Ophthalmic Pathology (3%). Satisfaction in each scale was defied as a score more than 60% of total score.
Results:
A total of 318 ophthalmologists with the mean age of 41.6±12.9 years and 14±12 years duration of practice were participated in the present study. They were mostly satisfied about feeling their job as a whole (57.5%, mean score: 47±12) and dissatisfied with their income (76.6%, mean score: 36±14). There was a statistically significant association of job satisfaction with the male gender (p=0.04), older ages (p=0.002) and with increased duration of practice (p=0.004). In addition, fellowships compared with general ophthalmologists (p=0.027) and those with a private office were more satisfied (p=0.007).
Conclusion:
Job satisfaction of ophthalmologists is critical for improvement of eye health care systems. The results of our study showed that they have an acceptable job satisfaction, generally, but young ophthalmologists appear to need more attention.
