Purpose:

To evaluate the effect and success rate of adjustable sutures in horizontal recurrent or residual non-paralytic strabismus surgery.

Methods:

In this retrospective, single-center medical record review, 44 patients who had undergone adjustable suture surgery for post-surgical horizontal recurrent or residual non-paralytic strabismus during the 9 years from 2007 to 2015 were evaluated. Surgery was considered successful if the patients had ≤ 10 prism diopters (PD) of horizontal ocular deviation at distance.

Results:

Twenty-eight patients had exotropia and 16 cases had esotropia. The mean age of patients was 21.48 (SD = 12.74) years and the mean pre-injection deviation was 33.18 (SD = 13.71) PD. The success rate at 1-week, 1-month, and 3-month post-injection visit and last visit (with a mean of 8.1 months) were 90.9%, 81.8%, 63.6%, and 59.1% respectively, with statistically significant differences in the angle of deviation compared to pre-injection deviation (p < 0.001 for all of them), and the mean percentage net change in ocular deviations were 103.57%, 104.42%, 107.84%, and 105.18% respectively. Ten patients (22.7%) were over-corrected and 8 cases (18.2%) were under-corrected at last visit. Subconjunctival hemorrhage occurred in 86.4% of patients and no cases of vertical deviation, eye infection, or globe rupture were reported.

Conclusion:

Adjustable suture surgery can improve success rate in recurrent or residual non-paralytic strabismus surgeries.
