Purpose:
Chronic renal failure affects every organ system including eye. Visual loss can occur from the primary cause of the disease, renal insufficiency and its complications and renal replacement therapy (hemodialysis or renal transplant) .Ocular involvement related to chronic renal failure and hemodialysis in different studies has been showed, but available finding are contradictory. The aim of this study is evaluation of ocular manifestation in hemodialysis patients of Hamadan Besat hospital.
Methods:
This research is a cross sectional- descriptive study in which ocular signs and symptoms of 74 hemodialysis patients in Hamadan Besat hospital had evaluated. patients information including age, sex, dialysis duration, cause of chronic renal failure were obtained . All patients underwent
ophthalmologic examination including visual acuity, slit lamp biomicroscopy and dilated
fundoscopy . All data had been recorded in a check list and analyzed with SPSS V.16.
Results:
Among 74 hemodialysis patients fifty percent of patients were male and %50 of them were female. Average of patients age was 58.8 years ,and mean duration of dialysis was 40.16 month. Mean of Visual acuity was 4.58(of 10). Most common ocular manifestations were: Macular abnormality (59.5%), cataract (56.7%), eye pain (56.7%), eye redness (52.7%), dry eye (50%) and eyelid edema (43.2%), respectively
Conclusion:
The most frequent eye manifestations were macular abnormality and cataract. Hypertension and diabetes mellitus were the most underling cause of CRF in our study. Ophthalmic disorders are frequent in hemodialysis patients, therefore periodic
ophthalmic examination is strongly recommended
