Purpose:
Post traumatic endophthalmitis is a severe and devastating complication of ocular trauma which can cause critical defects particularly in children. Therefore, we aimed to identify relative abundance of post traumatic endophthalmitis and its contributing risk factors in children.
Methods:
In this study, medical records of 375 patients with open globe injury aged 1-18, who were referred to Feiz hospital (Isfahan) from the date of 1387 until 1392 were analyzed. Data including age, sex, location of being injured, cause of trauma, time from injury to hospitalization and to repair, the presence of foreign body, the presence of lens rupture, site of ophthalmic injury, visual acuity (VA) at the time of admission and discharge, relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) test, duration of hospitalization and presence of post traumatic endophthalmitis were collected.
Results:
The frequency of post-traumatic endophthalmitis was about 3.5% (N = 13) of all patients. The number of 12 out 0f 13 cases with endophthalmitis had VA less than 1/10 Snellen charts on admission and discharge. Post traumatic endophthalmitis was more frequent among patients with positive RAPD test. Statistical analysis showed significant relationship between presence of lens rupture and higher rate of endophthalmitis (P=0.002). There was no significant relationship between other variables and relative abundance of post traumatic endophthalmitis.
Conclusion:
patients with low VA on admission and discharge, positive RAPD test and ruptured lens had a higher risk of post traumatic endophthalmitis.
