Purpose:
To determine the prevalence of amblyopia and its risk factors among 7-12 years old boy students in Asad abad, Iran.
Methods:
In this cross-sectional study students were selected by multistage cluster sampling. Examinations including UCVA, BCVA, cycloplegic refraction, cover test and ophthalmoscopy (for assesses the anterior segment, lens opacities and fundus) were performed for all of the participants. Amblyopia was defined as BCVA 20/30 or less or two-line visual acuity between two eyes.
Results:
Of the 1053 students, 1026 participated and analyses were done. The mean age of participants was 9.52±1.63 %. The spherical equivalent cycloplegic refractions was 0.40±0.89 %. The prevalence of amblyopia was 1.46% (95% CI: 0.73-2.19). Among the amblyopic students 66.6% were unilateral. 46.7% were anisometropic, 40% were strabismic and 13.3% were isometropic. Also 66.7% were hypermetropic.
Conclusion:
Despite the low prevalence of strabismic amblyopia, the prevalence of amblyopia is in mid-range in comparison with other countries. According to influence of hypermetropia on amblyopia, it is important to pay more attention to this refraction error.
