Purpose:
To present an intraocular melanoma in a 13 year old girl
Methods:
Iris melanomas are a relatively rare group of ocular tumors. These tumors mainly affect adults and are infrequently seen in pediatric patients. There are also important differences in the clinical presentation of iris melanomas between these two groups. Tumors in pediatric patients are often smaller, less invasive to other ocular structures and less probable to cause secondary glaucoma. Different treatment modalities are available for iris melanomas if detected early; therefore differentiation between benign and malignant iris lesions is very important. Failure of detection may lead to morbid ocular and systemic complications.
Results:
Herein we report an unusual presentation of iris melanoma in a 13 years old girl. The patient presented with the complaint of five weeks of progressive vision loss in her left eye. Slit-lamp examinations revealed a heavily pigmented mass on superior half of the iris in the left eye that was clinically compatible with diagnoses of melanoma. Imagings showed no extraocular involvement. The lesion showed growth in size and increased pigmentation in the follow up examination performed two weeks later. Therefore the affected eyeball was fully excised through enucleation. Histopathological examinations were confirmatory and compatible with a rare type of malignant iris melanoma named epitheliod cell type.
Conclusion:
In this report the literature is reviewed on the clinical and histological findings of iris melanomas are the clinical relevance is discussed.
