Purpose:
To evaluate outcomes of Semicircular intrastromal corneal inlay implantation in patients with Advanced Pellucid Marginal Degeneration using femtosecond laser.
Methods:
This study is a prospective, non-randomized, consecutive case series at Farabi hospital (Tehran University of medical sciences) between 2013 and 2014.
13 eyes with advanced Pellucid Marginal Degeneration entered the study.
All the participants presented with reduced visual acuity, contact lens intolerance and no corneal scar.
After creation of an intrastromal corneal pocket at the depth of 250 microns and diameter of 9 milimeters using femtosecond laser and extending the pocket through the thin area near inferior limbus; a 140 micron thick semicircular inlay made of hexafocon A was entered into the stromal pocket.
Visual acuity, refraction, corneal topography, Biomechanics and aberrometry were evaluated before operation and in each postoperative visit during one year follow-up period.
Results:
Uncorrected visual acuity, cylindrical errors, coma, Total higher order aberrations and corneal resistance factor were improved significantly one year after surgery (p<0.01) but no change was detected for corrected visual acuity, mean keratometery, spherical refractive error and corneal hysteresis after one year(p>0.05).
Conclusion:
Semicircular intrastromal corneal inlay implantation seems an acceptable treatment option in patients with advanced Pellucid Marginal Degeneration.
