Purpose:
To evaluate retinal vascular layers in Macular Telangiectasia Type 2 (MacTel2) imaged by Optical Coherence Tomographic Angiography (OCTA).
Methods:
Patients with MacTel 2 were enrolled in a prospective, observational case series study. Images of the superficial and deep capillary plexus were analyzed and compared with structural Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
Results:
Twelve eyes of six patients were enrolled. OCTA findings were as: foveal avascular zone irregularities in both superficial and deep plexuses, avascular areas in parafovelar area and vascular abnormalities like telangiectatic vessels in parafovea. Vascular abnormalities were observed in areas without retinal degenerations. Vascular changes were mostly focused in temporal parafovea. Vascular abnormalities were more pronounced in the deep vascular plexus, a layer poorly visualized by fluorescein angiography
Conclusion:
Contrary to previous reports, as evidenced by our case series, vascular abnormities were documented in otherwise normal retina. Microvascular abnormalities in deep vascular and most probably induced ischemic changes, may precede retinal degeneration.
