Purpose:
:To compare the success rate of pushed (Monoka™) versus pulled (Masterka™) monocanalicular intubation in adults with Nasolacrimal duct stenosis.(NLDS)
Methods:
On a comparative randomized study, 98 eyes (89 patients) with NLDS underwent probing and either Monoka (51 eyes, group 1) or Masterka (47 eyes, group 2) intubation .Included were symptomatic (Munk grade ≥3) adults with NLDS(based on irrigation test). Tube was removed 6-8 weeks after the procedure. Munk grade 0 and 1 was defined as complete success, 2 as partial success, and ≥3 as failure, 6 months after tube removal. Any complication was recorded.
Results:
Mean age of patients was 54.5years and 59.2% of them were female. Complete success was reported by 27 patients (52.9%) in group 1 and by 20 patients (42.6%) in group 2. Partial success was reported by 9 patients (17.6%) in group 1 and by 6 patients (12.8%) in group 2. failure was reported by 15 patients (29.4%) in group 1 and by 21 patients (44.7%) in group 2. The difference between two groups was not statistically significant. (P=0.29). A significantly (P=0.04) higher success rate was observed in patients with associated common canalicular stenosis only in masterka group (76.6%) than just nasolacrimal duct stenosis (45.5% ).
Conclusion:
Success rate of Monoka versusMasterka was not significantly different in adult patients with NLDS in this study. None of the variables had a significant effect on the success rate except associated common canalicular stenosis in Masterka group.
