Purpose:

Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, is characterized by damage to the optic nerve which transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. Glaucoma influenced by multiple risk factors. Among the various causes, diabetes is considered to play a key role in the mechanism of glaucoma. Diabetes causes increased oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a disturbance in the balance between the production of reactive oxygen species, free radicals, and antioxidant defenses and one of the crucial contributors in the pathogenesis of the glaucoma. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Rosmarinic acid (RA), a phenolic compound with biological activities such as anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, on glaucoma.

Methods:

In this study investigated the efficacy of RA administration on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced glaucoma in rats. The animals received RA. Glaucoma was evaluated by some tests such as ABTS, DPPH, Ferric chloride and etc.

Results:

: experimental data showed that the use of RA could prevented and retarded the development of glaucoma in the animal models.

Conclusion:

RA because of its Anti-oxidant property could inhibition or to slow the progression of glaucoma by Neutraliz free radicals and increase antioxidant defense.
