Purpose:
The goal of present study is to comparing inflammatory marker (hs-crp, ESR, cystatin-c) among three groups of diabetic patients.
Methods:
This is a case control study conducted on diabetic patients admitted to ophthalmology clinic. The sample size was consisted of 19 diabetes patient's without retinopathy, 22 patients with non prolifrative retinopathy and 26 proliferative retinopathy patients. The sampling method was none randomized in all groups. Dada was analyses by SPSS 16 using Pearson Chi2, Fisher's exact and ANOVA. P ≤0.05 was considered significant.
Results:
sixty seven people were enrolled in the study. The normal study groups consist of 19(28.3%) patients, non prolifrative retinopathy, 22(32.8%) and prolifrative retinopathy 26(38.8%). The mean age, duration of diabetes and hemoglobin A1c were mached in these groups. The mean level of ESR in prolifrative retinopathy, non prolifrative retinopathy and non retinopathy was 20.08±18.68mm/hr, 13.09±9.25 mm/hr and 13.37±7.04 mm/hr respectively (p=0.1). The mean level of hs-CRP in prolifrative retinopathy, patients with non prolifrative retinopathy and non retinopathy was 7.58±4.86 mg/l, 7.73±9.28 mg/l and 9.05±9.7mg/l repectively (p=0.8). The mean level of Cystatin-C in prolifrative retinopathy, patients with non prolifrative retinopathy and non retinopathy was 1.71±0.92 mg/l, 1.22±0.38 mg/l and 1.10±0.48 mg/l repectively (p=0.007).
Conclusion:
This study showed that there is no significant relation between serum levels of inflammatory markers among three groups except of cystatin c in proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Thus we recommend the measurement of certain inflammatory markers in advance stage of retinopathy.
