Purpose:
Orbital exenteration is a psychologically and anatomically disfiguring Procedure which is indicated in patients with malignant neoplasms of orbital Contents and periorbital area.In this study, we retrospectively reviewed 129 patients that had received exenteration.
Methods:
This was a retrospective study of medical records from all patients who underwent exenteration of the orbit from 20 march 2001 to 20 mrach 2014 in the Oculoplastic Department at Tehran Farabi Eye hospital . Demographic data, diagnosis, site of primary involvement and techniques were determined in patients.
Results:
Of 174 exenteration which performed during 13 years period, 129 cases had documented pathology and were reviewed. The mean age of patients was 52.6 years ,with 71 males(55%) and 58 females(45%) having undergone exenteration.15 different tumors were identified. The most common indication was basal cell carcinoma in30 cses (23.3%) followed by Squamous cell carcinoma in 28 cases (21.7%),retinoblastoma in 21 cases(16.3%),melanoma in 15 cases(11.6%) and sarcoma in 11 case(8.5%).In total, globe was the most common site of involvement that necessitate need for exenteration(50) and lid was the second (46).Three types of exentration were performed in our cases; 46 case of Subtotal (35.7%),62 cases of total (48.1%) and 21 cases of Extensive(16.3%).In total 50 cases were evaluated pathologically for perineural involvement, of which perneural invasion was noted in 8 reports.
Conclusion:
Basal cell carcinoma contributes the majority of the patients underwent orbital exenteration. As, Exenterations are anatomically disfiguring procedures, aggressive treatment at the time of primary removal to reduce incidence and achieve more cosmetically acceptable results seems logical
