Purpose:
To evaluate visual, refractive outcomes and quality of vision after implantation of the AT LISA tri 839MP trifocal lens.
Methods:
This prospective case series study comprised 21 cataractous eyes from 14 patients who underwent crystalline lens phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation. Spherical equivalent (SE) refraction, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), corrected intermediate visual acuity (CIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), corrected near visual acuity (CNVA) were measured 1 and 3 months after surgery. Subjective quality of vision and presence of dysphotopsia by a short questionnaire were evaluated postoperatively.
Results:
At 1 and 3 months, mean monocular visual acuity were: 0.14 ±0.12 and 0.08 ± 0.10 for UDVA, 0.09 ± 0.08 and 0.08 ± 0.10 for UIVA, 0.07 ± 0.09 and 0.07 ± 0.09 logMAR (mean ± SD) for UNVA, respectively. Mean values of SE at 1 and 3 months after surgery were -0.70 ± 0.43 and -0.46 ± 0.41 D respectively. All these variables improved over time but significant change was only detected in SE between 1 and 3 months postoperatively (P=0.003). At 1 month, mean scores (0 = no symptoms; 1 = strong symptoms) for glare at night and halos were 0.16 ± 0.34 and 0.18 ± 0.35 and at 3 months were 0.04 ± 0.21 and 0.13 ± 0.21 respectively. Difficulties related to photic phenomena reduced over time. Regarding the questionnaire, patients’ level of satisfaction mean score for performing daily activities without problems was 75% and 90% at 1 and 3 months respectively. This satisfaction was statistically significant (P=0.015).
Conclusion:
The AT LISA tri 839MP trifocal implant provides excellent uncorrected distance, intermediate and near vision with minimal level of photic phenomena and high level of patient satisfaction.
