Purpose:
|
Endogenous Candida endophthalmitis (CE) is a rare disease. We report CE following spontaneous abortion in a woman with candida vaginitis.
|

Methods:
|
A 40-year-old woman who had candida vaginitis and spontaneous abortion 10 days ago developed left eye pain and blurring of vision (hand motion). A diagnosis of CE was established on the basis of, characteristic fundus finding, positive vaginal smear and culture, and culture for Candida hyphae from the vitreous specimen.

Results:
|
She treated with systemic amphotericin B and fluconazole and pars plana vitrectomy with intravitreal amphotericin B injection. Postoperatively, vitritis and fundus lesion resolved gradually. 3 months after treatment, visual acuity was 20/100.

Conclusion:
|
Complicated abortion and preexisting candida vaginitis may cause endogeneus CE in a young healthy woman.Early diagnosis, taking exact past medical history and aggressive treatment with pars plana vitrectomy and intravitreal injection of amphotericin B proved as a method of choice in treating this severe ophthalmic disease.
