Purpose:
Exposure to the sulfur mustard (SM) can produce surface ocular injury. We decided to study the aqueous H2O2 concentration as an oxidant agent and super oxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) activity as antioxidant indices in an animal model of ocular injuries induced by SM.
Methods:
: NM (nitrogen mustard) and SM administered as distinct amount in the left eye of 6 six rabbits, respectively. Two groups of 6 rabbits without any exposure with the SM and NM, selected as control groups. After 1 and 5 day , H2O2 concentration and SOD activity measured in aqueous specimens.
Results:
: The aqueous H2O2 concentration was lower significantly in the specimens of first and 5th day in SM exposure group (P< 0.001 and P<0.05 respectively) in comparison with control group. But SOD activity was only higher significantly in the specimens of 5th day (P<0.05). There were no differences between measured indices in NM group on comparison with control group.
Conclusion:
According to the gradual increase in SOD activity and decreased concentration of H2O2 in aqueous specimens if rabbits exposed SM, H2O2 can be considered as an oxidant reactant in inducing ocular complications of SM in early hours after exposure. Regarding the slow process of increasing SOD activity, it can’t inhibit hydrogen peroxide effects in early period after exposure.
