Purpose:
To compare peripapillary and submacular choroidal thickness between the affected eyes of patients with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and their unaffected eyes and the eyes of healthy control participants.
Methods:
In this prospective comparative study we used Enhanced depth imaging of optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) to evaluate peripapillary and macular choroidal thickness of Twenty-five eyes with acute NAION (Within less than three weeks of visual loss), we used horizontal raster scan of macula and horizontal and vertical raster scan of optic disc. Choroidal thickness was measured from posterior edge of RPE to the choroido-scleral junction and we compared the measurements with unaffected fellow eyes, and normal control subjects.
Results:
Mean of average choroidal thickness at the 1000µm distance from the BMO( Bruch’s membrane opening) was 162±47 µm, 156±44 µm and 121 ±47 µm respectively in NAION eyes, in unaffected fellow eyes, and in normal control eyes. Mean PCT(peripapillary choroidal thichness) values were significantly greater in the NAION eyes(P:0.004) and unaffected fellow eyes (P:0.017) compare with the control eyes. average of central macular choroidal thickness(macular choroidal thichness) was 285±69 µm, 273±74 µm and 222 ±62 µm in NAION eyes, unaffected fellow eyes and in normal control eyes respectively. Mean MCT values were significantly greater in the NAION eyes(P:0.003) and unaffected fellow eyes (P:0.021) than in the control eyes.
Conclusion:
Peripapillary and macular choroidal thickness is thicker in NAION eyes and unaffected fellow eyes compare with normal control subject.
